Those who do not learn history are condemned to repeat it!
Unlike many schools today First College has a flourishing History subject both at junior level and up to exam preparation. History is at its core, STORIES and most young people love stories. Many of the most popular computer games are based on historical situations.
As in all our lessons we strongly encourage discussion, and personal opinion. The skills and courtesies of sharing ideas, especially where there is disagreement, are essential parts of a young person's education.

sapphire FIRST CLASS Young students or students who have had problems are placed in the FIRST CLASS, or basic level. History is taught here by Colin, an older teacher who has a firm grasp of class discipline and who works hard to bring history alive in all its living excitement.
Colin finds that what works best at this level is the drama of earlier societies. He explores adventures with the fiery Celts, the warring Saxons, lordly Normans and some proud African societies like the Zulu. Dates are not a strong point for junior historians but the details of practical everyday life can really grasp attention. Intricate designs for weapons and jewellery, plus the stranger and weirder facts, invite a good close attention.
HOMEWORK for FIRST CLASS HISTORY is 45 mins a week.

sapphire SENIORS Students with good study skills move up to the intermediate SENIORS level - always an exciting change.
Seniors History is taught by John who also teaches the History exam programme.
John broadens the scope from the earlier History level, researching the great Empires of the world. The choice of which ones is discussed each term and decided between John and the students.
What was it like, living in a world where few people knew exactly how old they were? What was it like when town clocks in two towns ten miles apart might be an hour out of step?
How did people live when things we take for granted, like sophisticated medicine, fast transport, warm homes, food stored in fridges and exotic fruits like oranges out of season were simply unheard of? How did the state rule a country when it might take three weeks for a message to get from one end of the kingdom to another?
How did we move from these periods to modern industrial society? Why did we do it? Were the older ways of life better or worse than ours?
We look at history by using a mixture of traditional textbook study, web research, and project work.
Through understanding the practical struggles and mistakes of people in history we can see how the same things are happening now. By studying history students learn why things are how they are now, and how they are likely to develop. This views history as a process which is still being made - right now.
Yet another approach John finds successful is to run projects which research the history of the students' own home areas. As our students live in many places this can be unexpected and fascinating.
HOMEWORK for SENIORS HISTORY is 1 hour a week.

sapphire SCHOLARS The exam program, "Scholars" ~ prepares for the prestigious IGCSE exams. These are better quality exams than ordinary GCSEs, and universally recognised.
The exam program is a minimum of 5 terms of study (there are 3 school terms a year).
Senior History teacher John ensures the History exam course trains logical and analytic thinking to a high level. Considered a "tough" teacher by his students, yet John's History is also much enjoyed and his students who gain high grades.
PAPER 1. The French Revolution. Napoleon. The Russian Revolution. Stalin.
PAPER 2. Choice of 20thC War or 19thC Medicine.
Students must have strong writing skills and ability to organise facts in both short points, and long, essay style answers.
BOOKS: John finds GCSE books poor quality so he uses A Level textbooks - but the student is given selected sections to read.
HOMEWORK 1.5 hours weekly. Involves short, formal questions and essay work.
Descriptions of all Exam Subjects.

1. Happy students. 2. 95% homework completion. 3. High exam results IGCSE.

Why is it called "First College" when it's a high school or secondary school?
We train a strongly collegiate style of studying so that the student learns to take responsibility for their own work and deadlines. It means the transfer to later qualifications, University, or (self) employment is much easier as a result.

First College UK is very much a family business.
We created it to educate our own son, who is now
a junior online teacher in the school! (under strict supervision)

CRB checks (Standard Level) on all teachers;
DP registration (Notification reference: jvl530);
Please do ask for any of this to be explained.
