People do say some wonderful things about our work in First College UK. We'd like to share this with you.

You might find the results of the little survey we did in 2010 interesting. All students did it for us, but they did not put their names. We were surprised at just how appreciative AND honest they were.

New enquirer: I hadn't realised that this option was available otherwise we certainly would have started earlier.

Mother of a young man living abroad who needs to get exams to go to college in the UK.
Local schools had not worked out well:

Firstly, thank you so much, I saw a great enthusiasm this morning to prepare for lessons, something which has been lacking for a while, and [my child] did seem to enjoy his first day.

Mother of a high achiever student who had never felt adequately understood or challenged before: [We] cannot believe how quickly and accurately you have summed up [our son] and his school life. ... We are both very, very impressed and we applaud you.
On a personal note, I am so relieved that everything you told me turns out to be true. You said you were a good teacher, you said your school was far better than the average school. I wasn't sure at the time if you were just trying to sell us on First College. Now ... I absolutely believe you.
.. There was a lot of honesty... You have completely earned [our son's] trust and respect and he is looking forward... to a far brighter future than he had just a week or two ago.

Parent of boy who had previously been terrified of school: he's v anxious to get everything right this week and wants to get all his homework in on time ..... never have I seen him so keen to do work!!!
It's been a v positive start for him this week we feel and he actually said 'boo' when I said no school tomorrow, he was quite upset really! Thank you for your lovely comments I will pass them on and it will do his self esteem no end of good, I can't tell you how much he is enjoying it... thank goodness we took the decision to join you

Mother: I don't think I've ever seen a school before where people WANT to come to school more! :P What's your secret?

Mother of a boy who was nervous and distrustful: Just wanted to let you know that I cant believe the turn around with [my child] and homework !! He is really trying hard to get good grades, I've never seen him like this before thank you so much
Just wanted to thank all his teachers, can you pass on the message - he thinks they are all great.

Student to Maths teacher: Thanks again! For many things - I've had so many teachers shout algebra and other things down my ear and expect me to then know everything. You explained it properly. I look forward to learning more Algebra, I actually really do!"

Mother: Just to let you know that [my child] and I were in fits of giggles at your "official" letter. It was perfect, totally perfect. Just what [my child] needed to make him more settled. He has informed me that he never knew school could be so relaxed.
I only wish I had found out about your school before now!
Thank you - my little boy is full of smiles and talking about school enthusiastically, something I never thought I would see!

At the end of 2010 we circulated a questionnaire to all students. This is what we were told:
SOFTWARE. The verdict was overwhelming that the software is no problem, specifically “simple and easy to use.”
OTHER STUDENTS A big YES that First College students ARE friendly and helpful.
Many remarked especially on feeling really welcomed on arrival.
At all levels it is apparently well known that you only have to ask to get help.
Some were a little cautious saying manners and helpfulness were much better after they moved up a class to a level that suited them better.
When asked if other students are annoying there was some irritation with a few juniors who put in 'fun stuff' when it's not relevant but generally the responses were approving. One student clearly had a problem with one other, which we looked into and supported as a result of the questionnaire.
TEACHERS. The reaction here was almost 100% positive. Over and over students tell us how patient, helpful and friendly the teachers are. One teacher was criticised for not being available whenever needed on the Messenger. All teachers are expected to be available even on days they do not teach.
Many students stressed how helpful they find the informal relationship between students and teachers, both using first names and the general attitude. Over and over again there were comments about how teachers make lessons and work interesting. We were surprised at just how appreciative the students are of our efforts. They clearly know that we do work hard for them, and said so.
There were many appreciative comments noticing how 'praise' is given freely and is a strong motivator.
On being asked to grade their teachers, John who is considered the toughest teacher in the school, demanding a great deal from students, came out top! Just as surprising, if anyone came bottom it was Shan because the nuts and bolts of English are disliked. However she was also said to be "brilliant" and "exciting" then when the subjects of study were polled English came top!
The other teachers ranged in between with none receiving the kind of criticism that would be a concern while getting many appreciative comments.
Students said they much appreciated the opportunity to speak freely on what they thought. When asked what specifically they would improve in individual teachers most said very definitely - nothing. Those that did make suggestions were very sensible, some not possible in terms of software or group working, while some asked for faster homework marking.
HOMEWORK Surprisingly no we apparently do not give too much and it is not too hard. Yes we are strict but our students are strikingly mature in understanding this is necessary.
OUR WEAKEST POINTS: Slow homework marking especially by the two Heads who have so much other work to do. We knew this was our weakest area so it was no surprise, but a relief that nothing else came up over all.
Some would quite like to meet the teachers in person but others find it peaceful and helpful that they do not.
Some objections were revealing - no days off when it snows! - too much holiday time would really like more term weeks - - classes on Fridays wanted - it's a pain having fun but suddenly the school day is finished.
OUR BEST POINTS: Lack of bullying came out top.
Firm discipline so we can actually learn/ a lot less distraction from friends.
Equality.
The comfort and relaxation of studying at home.
More time for family life.
Making new friends.
Learning at one's own pace.
Small classes.
Becoming a fast typist.
Having automatic records of lessons.
PERSONAL COMMENTS Quite a few comments on "fitting in" for the first time.
Freedom to express opinions.
A lot of comments about how unkind other schools are by comparison, with some comments absolutely heartrending.
Teachers were thanked for not treating students as "just students."
At the same time there was often a very mature understanding that while teachers can be friendly, it is not a true "friend" relationship.

2008 Typical comment by parents about new student brother and sister: "They are SO excited they can't wait to go to school!”
Most parents are now showing their trust and respect by paying termly or for the whole year up front.
However you are still very welcome to pay monthly.

2008 Parent of student who decided to leave. "We’re so grateful for what you have done for our [son]. It’s due to the time spent with you that he is now able to go the the high level school we only dreamed of before. We do hope if it doesn't work out well you can make room for him to come back."

FIRST EXAM RESULTS Our system is that students take ONE exam (a real exam) as a practice.
If they get a good result they can cross it off the list. If not it's just practice and they can re-sit six months later when they do their full list. (Actually we've only had one re-sit so far and that was a mistake in the exam registration for a basic exam instead of advanced level)

Our first exam results were all of them GRADES: A* .... B ..... C.
The one C grade was because this student took the Foundation level (basic level) as an easier practice exam; her maximum grade possible was a C. When she resits she'll get an A* or A.

May 2008 Student comment after a Philosophy & Society seminar:
"I forgot to breathe too much thinking!"

April 2008 Our first exam students, comments.
"It was exactly how you told us it would be. I felt I knew just what to do."
"Frankly it was EMBARRASSING! All these other students being scared and terrified - and I wasn't! I kind of pretended I was scared too because it didn't seem kind to look like I was superior and OK.
"When we had our extra tutorials on how to do exams I thought some of your advice was a bit well odd. But when I was actually doing it, I did as you said and it worked perfectly. Thank you."
"It was EASY! Much easier than your lessons! You’re actually tough teachers you know though that works out great in the exam."
"So cool you went over how we'd feel afterwards. I remembered what you said and it helped a lot.
It was like you were taking care of us right up to when we got home again."

April 2008 Student: "I really like First college-especially the teachers, they are really kind and understanding and very patient too."

March 2008. Father of 16yrs boy who has decided to leave, against his father's wishes. I want to thank you very much for all the efforts and hard work you put in to help my son [over the last 2 years]. I am also grateful to all of your staff too.
I feel very sad how things have turned out and I know this is due to no fault on your part. In fact I couldn't have asked for more from you. You accommodated [my son] and you worked really hard to help him. Unfortunately he does not want to stay... I have to let him stand on his own two feet.
Thanks once again and I do hope things go well for you at First College. I do think things will go well for you as I think your resource is something that is really beneficial for pupils who aren't going to be able to cope with regular school. I don't think if I was of school age now I would want to be at a mainstream school. I would be most grateful if this doesn't work out if you would consider having my son back should he decide that he will stick at it.

Feb 2008 About anLEA Inspection (Kent) Just to let you now we have just had our education inspector's visit, really positive.
He thought your school was excellent. He has taken your details and fees etc as the scheme they are piloting in Kent costs £8000. What a difference he could not believe your fees were so reasonable for the amount of support, learning, work etc Was impressed with the report page and the feedback on marked homework.
He said the standard of education [our child] is getting is more than adequate which [our child] is delighted about. ... has been getting very little sleep as he has been so anxious about this visit and is over the moon now.

Feb 2008 Mother of shy boy of 11. First College has been brilliant and we think that you are doing a superb job and providing a lot more than just education for children and parents in search of something a bit more special than anything else out there. [Our child's] confidence has really grown, his communication skills have blossomed and he has made some nice friends.
First College seems to be evolving all the time and we have noticed how much difference all the little changes make even in the short time we have been with you. All of the staff have been great, but we have to mention that we think you are wonderful Shan. We love your happy, positive, encouraging, enthusiastic, kind and caring, yet authoritative leadership. You are vital to FC. [Our child] has loved [your son] Tal as a teacher who is following in your footsteps of being a life-force in FC.

Jan 2008 Excerpt from letter to parents by Bucks LEA officer re girl of 15. Thank you so much for your warm welcome 17 January. I very much enjoyed meeting you and [your daughter] and learning about the internet education programme offered by First College. I have to say that I was impressed both by the programme itself and by [your daughter's] approach to it. The course organisers have obviously put a great deal of thought into providing a virtual school day that is varied and challenging, with built in personal relationships ... for each student. [Your daughter] has responded really well and seems to be enjoying her work. ...
I have no hesitation in confirming that the education you are providing for your daughter fully meets the legal requirements.
(Bucks LEA is not allowed to endorse or officially recommend any individual education provider. This comment was about a specific family.)

Father of high achiever daughter: Once again Shan, thank you and John for all your assistance and help extended to [our daughter] during her schooling with First College. We very much appreciate this and know that our daughter, will strive to do her best at all times, under your inspiring and caring guidance.”

2007 Mother of an anxious student who had enormous difficulties putting in homework. Just to say thanks for the feedback on[our son's homework.
He had tried very hard and it was nice to have it recognised. You have made our young man very happy.

June 2007 Father of boy 14. "He says the school is "banging" which if you knew his previous school history is a nothing short of a miracle so we can safely say he will be staying with you."

May 2007 Father of teenager with a very difficult past record: “I just wanted to put down how pleased my wife and I are about how well [our child] is doing at First College. As you are aware [our child] has had to overcome some really painful difficulties and he really wasn't getting the help he needed in the two mainstream secondary schools he attended.
We feel certain that your school has had a very positive influence on him and he has been able to make some real progress which I don't think would have been possible without your personal level of attention.”

Jan 2007 Father of boy with extremely painful spinal condition which restricted his life very badly and completely prevented school attendance: We thought our son was forgotten by the system. Now we have hope again.

Parents of a bullied girl: "It's so nice to see her smiling again."

Father of imaginative, creative son who had been badly bullied before coming to First College UK: I would prefer to pay for the whole year not just month by month as [our son] is really enjoying it.

Jan 2007 Mother of shy girl: I particularly like the way the children are helping one another and are being encouraged to work as a group.”

Nov 2006 Father of resistant student: "Amazing! He just actually WROTE an ESSAY!!!!"

2006 Father of a student who had HATED school … he seems to be loving it, and is only sorry (as he said today) that there aren't lessons on Fridays!!!!!! I almost had a coronary!!

May 2006 Mother, about her home educated daughter: "I like seeing her free to take things further and deeper. I think she was bored before."

In the first month of First College: FATHER: "I never imagined it could be so lively and sociable."

MOTHER: "“The steepest learning curve seems to be for us parents in getting to grips with this new way of learning - the students all seem to be taking to it really quickly.”

FIRST MONTH STUDENT: "It's not like school. I really like school now lol! the 1st time in my life!”

FIRST MONTH STUDENT: "I find this sooo cool. It’s like u dont have to go to school but do it on the computer and all kids love the computer – and they’re also learning.”

First College UK is a family business. It was created to educate our son, who gained his exams, then went on to become a teacher in the school. As well as the family there are four other teachers making a team of seven in all. See ABOUT OUR TEACHERS.
