Students who wish to take IGCSE O Level exams join the Exam Tutorial class, preferably two years in advance of the exam date, but if they are keen and capable, they can join earlier still.
Materials studied are set by the Edexcel Examinations Board, which does allow a small amount of choice in some subjects. There are no coursework components for the IGCSE. The syllabus has a more international outlook than the standard GCSE and is considered the equal or slightly harder than standard IGCSE.
Edexcel supports many international examination centres where the Student can physically attend the exam session. First College will work in partnership with the family to register the Student for their exams.
Exam Tutorial Students are taken through a thorough survey of the exam components, and given practice in actual exam questions. They can be provided with Exam Quizzes that mean they can self-test on the work required.
Exam Tutorial Students are given intensive and extremely detailed support in personal organisation leading up to the exam date; in stress management; and the practical strategies for the Examination Session itself.
With the First College Exam Guide program no Student needs to be frightened or unduly stressed by their exams. Providing a Student follows instructions given by the First College Exam Guide, and has completed the Exam Tutorial coursework to a good standard, they should receive good exam results.
First College classes are kept small, at under 15 Students. But smaller study Tutorials are especially relevant to exam preparation.
As well as dividing the class into smaller groups at times, First College may recommend additional private tutorials in the afternoons. These would be especially appropriate for Students with a strong interest in a subject, or for anyone who finds a particular subject challenging. Private intensive one-to-one tutorials with First College approved teachers can use exactly the same First College facilities as normal classes do, or they can be worked through telephone sessions, or in person, depending on what is practicable between Teacher and Student.
